Daudy photographed in 2016 at her studio in a handsewn dancing skirt from Segovia and black velvet jacket from Arles. Daudy adapted the traditional costume embroidering words inside and out.
Vogue editorial highlighting the personal style of British conceptual artist Kate Daudy.
The item she wears in the second image is a handmade couture gown given to her by the grand-daughter of Dominique de Menil. Dressing in vintage clothing is also part of Daudy’s personal practice of under-consumption, care and sustainability.
Other examples of this is Daudy’s Trunk 006 for Louis Vuitton, and the Honey Window she created for Columbia University in 2018 The work was made with beautiful timber from a fallen maple tree salvaged from a community park in South London thanks to the Council. For more information about this project please read Mathew Armstrong’s essay for Columbia published on their website 2025 (also on this website eventually)
Daudy has an exceptional wardrobe of clothing she has bought on Ebay, from Portobello Road near her studio where she likes to go on Friday morning, and given to her by friends who know of her love of costume. Her artistic practice has led to commissions and sponsorship from luxury brands such as Loro Piana, Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Memo Paris and Omorovicza.
As well as these sponsorship and ambassadorial agreements Daudy has traditional costumes from all over the world. She owns and wears hand made Schiaparelli gowns made for her friends Mother the great beauty Pauline Gunn by Mme Schiaparelli herself and other personal and clothing rarities.
Daudy wears these clothes all the time, which is why Vogue wanted to write about her wardrobe. She secretly dresses up eg in all one colour but different textures to be a piece of wood, or the earth with red tights for magma, green skirt for the earth and mountains, blue jumper for the sky and heavens, cream earrings for the clouds, and so on.
Daudy has made costumes and Wearable Units for Icelandic singer Bjork, Rufus Wainwright, The Arctic Monkeys, Kate McGarrigle, Glyndebourne Opera as well as commissions for jeweller Cora Sheibani and other collectors.
