Early drawings inspired by the backgrounds of Old Master paintings

2005

Drawing

Early drawings from ongoing series looking at trees in the background of Old Master paintings and drawings from the late medieval/early renaissance period.
The artist's interest in the tacit and unspoken here expresses itself through the appreciation of that in other visual artists. At this period of history artists often had too much humility to presume to imagine the facial expression of saints martyrs and other religious figures portrayed in their work, and so in Daudy's imagination chose instead to use the landscapes in which these events took place as a means of expressing their own feelings.

Impassive gaolers stone martyrs to death for example in Fra Angelico's Fra Angelico's San Marco Altarpiece (1438-40) and the saints themselves appear untroubled by their own ongoing violent death but the trees in the background stand in horror, their arms raised in alarm and despair like mourners at a funeral.
